Functional Traits of a Rainforest Vascular Epiphyte Community: Trait Covariation and Indications for Host Specificity

چکیده

Trait matching between interacting species may foster diversity. Thus, high epiphyte diversity in tropical forests be partly due to the of trees and some degree host specificity. However, possible trait is basically unexplored. Since epiphytic habitat poses particular challenges plants, their correlations should differ from terrestrial but what extent unclear as epiphytes are underrepresented or missing large databases. We quantified 28 traits 99 vascular a lowland forest Panama that were related plant size, leaf, stem, root morphology; photosynthetic mode; nutrient concentrations. analyzed covariation, community weighted means, functional for assemblages on stems crowns four tree species. found intriguing differences plants regarding covariation relations maximal height, stem specific density, length, tissue den-sity, i.e., economic spectra. Regarding specificity, we strong evidence environmental filtering traits, only crowns. On stems, means differed one case, whereas > 2/3 all Although able interpret these light differences, findings mark an important step towards understanding

Relationships between Community Level Functional Traits of Trees and Seedlings during Secondary Succession in a Tropical Lowland Rainforest

Most of the previous studies on functional traits focus exclusively on either seedlings or trees. Little knowledge exists on the relationships between community level functional traits of trees and seedlings during succession. Here, we examine variations of the community-level functional traits for trees and seedlings and their correlations along a secondary successional and environmental gradi...

Molecular evidence for host specificity of parasitic nematode microfilariae in some African rainforest birds.

Here we describe, determine the prevalence, and examine the host-specificity of some parasitic nematode microfilariae in selected bird species from West and Central Africa. We used microscopy to determine the prevalence of microfilariae in 969 host individuals representing 121 rainforest bird species from Cameroon, Côte d'Ivoire and Equatorial Guinea. Thirteen (11%) of these potential host spec...

Testing the trait-based community framework: Do functional traits predict competitive outcomes?

Plant traits can be used to understand a range of ecological processes, including competition with invasive species. The extent to which native and invasive species are competing via limiting similarity or trait hierarchies has important implications for the management of invaded communities. We screened 47 native species that co-occur with Festuca perennis, a dominant invader in California ser...
